The criminal case of Isabella is one of the most well-known and tragic in Brazil. Isabella, just 5 years old, was murdered in 2008. Her father, Alexandre , and her stepmother, Anna Carolina, were charged with the crime. The girl was found seriously injured in the garden of the building where the couple lived, in São Paulo, after being thrown from the sixth-floor window of the apartment.

Investigations revealed that, before being thrown, Isabella suffered physical violence inside the apartment. Traces of the girl's blood were found in the family car and in the apartment, including on the defendants' clothes. In addition, small handprints and signs of strangulation were identified on Isabella's neck.

In 2010, Alexandre  and Anna Carolina were tried and convicted for Isabella's murder. Alexandre received a sentence of 31 years, 1 month and 10 days in prison, and Anna Carolina received 26 years and 8 months in prison. Both were convicted of triple homicide. Over the years, the case has continued to generate great commotion and public debate in Brazil about domestic and child violence.

In May of this year, after 16 years in prison, Alexandre  was authorized to progress to an open regime. The decision was made by Judge José Loureiro , who considered the time already served and the defendant's good behavior.

During his time in prison, had 990 days of his sentence remitted due to work and studies.

Henry Case

The case of Henry  , a 4-year-old boy who died in March 2021, has become one of the most discussed and tragic recent criminal events in Brazil, and has yet to be resolved.

Henrys stepfather, Dr. Jairo Souza Santos Júnior, , and the boy's mother, Monique Medeiros, are defendants in the crime. Both were charged with double homicide and torture, and are being held in preventive detention.

The investigation indicates that Henry suffered a series of physical attacks that culminated in his death from internal bleeding and liver laceration, caused by a violent action.

The former councilman and Monique deny that there was any aggression against Henry. According to both versions, the boy hurt himself when he fell from the bed where he was sleeping.

Judge Elizabeth Machado, of the II Jury Court, ordered that the former couple be brought before a jury trial, but the trial has not yet been scheduled.

The repercussions of the case generated significant debates about child protection, parental responsibility and the justice system in Brazil. In May 2022, the Henry Law (Law 14.344/22) was enacted, which expanded protective measures for children and adolescents who are victims of domestic or family violence and now considers the murder of a minor under 14 years of age a heinous crime, with a prison sentence of 12 to 30 years.
