Difficult, exhausting and lonely task

the lawyer says that she had her son, Gabriel, in the last year of law school, but decided not to drop out of the course. He went away for two months and, during exam time, attended college while his son stayed in the car with his mother. She also continued her internship two months after the birth of her son. After completing the course, she stopped for a year to take care of her son and then took the OAB exam, starting to practice law.

Among the difficulties of facing the profession as a mother and the sole caregiver of her son, Juliana spoke of exhaustion, loneliness, and guilt, for working too much; She cited the difficulty in making decisions without having someone to share the responsibility with, and the effort in going out of her way to be present in all of her son's activities. Even so, the lawyer claims that her son has always been her motivation.

"Despite all the difficulties, abandoned dreams, Gabriel became my fuel, my motivation. I had to succeed, I had no other alternative. Solo motherhood is an arduous, lonely and exhausting task. I always blamed myself for work a lot, but there was no other alternative: I had a child to support and educate. Often, leisure and self-care were left aside. The lack of support in decisions is one of the aspects that weighed most, the absence of the father in the presentations. from school and football games, since I had to manage at 30 to manage a law firm routine and do my job for two. It's a tiring routine, but I feel fulfilled, because everything I've been through has made me happy. a stronger and more resilient person, it was worth every second."

The numbers related to law are a reflection of the Brazilian reality, which shows that the number of women  in the country  who are solo mothers is increasing.

The study also indicates that solo mothers have more difficulty entering the job market.

The "solo" does not just refer to the absence of a spouse, but to the fact that all responsibilities fall solely on the mother. Still according to the research, the majority of these mothers, just over 70%, live only with their children, are black women, almost 7 million, and are in the North and Northeast of the country.

In search of rights

Bill 3,717/21 is being processed in Congress , which aims to establish the rights of single mothers. The text guarantees, for 20 years, a series of benefits to those who take care of the house and children alone. Already approved by the Senate in 2022, the text awaits analysis by the Chamber of Deputies.

Authored by Senator Eduardo Braga, the text provides that single mothers with a per capita family income of up to half the minimum wage will receive double the assistance benefits intended for families with children and adolescents.

Another device seeks to give priority to children of single mothers in the distribution of places in public early childhood education schools (daycare and pre-school), a priority that may be in relation to the set of places, or over places closer to home.

Regarding the job market, the bill says that large companies will have to provide quotas, filling a minimum percentage of positions with single mothers.

It also facilitates access to credit for single mothers and priority assistance in housing programs.
