Eduardo Gomes and Carlos Portinho, in addition to the newly elected Rogério Marinho, are running in the PL primaries for the election of Senate president
With the definition of the deputies and senators who will represent the country in the coming years, the National Congress is now preparing for the internal elections, a process in which the parliamentarians choose the heads of the two Legislative Houses. If in the Chamber of Deputies the favoritism of Arthur Lira (PP-AL) is even recognized by allies of President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), who has already stated that he will not interfere in the election, in the Senate the dispute is open . The current president of Casa Alta, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), is a candidate for re-election. PSD parliamentarians, chaired by Gilberto Kassab, say they believe that the miner has the necessary votes for reappointment. Despite this, the Liberal Party (PL) is moving to present a competitive candidate capable of defeating Pacheco. As it is the largest group, with 14 senators, the acronym of President Jair Bolsonaro claims the command of the House in the biennium 2023-2025. According to members of the PL summit heard by the Jovem Pan website, three names will compete in a preliminary process to choose the name that will represent the legend in the likely clash with the PSD candidate.
The three names are Eduardo Gomes (TO), leader of the government in the National Congress, Carlos Portinho (RJ), leader of the Bolsonaro government in the Senate, and Rogério Marinho (RN), former Minister of Regional Development. Other names were being considered for the dispute, cases of Damares Alves (DF) and Magno Malta (ES), who returns to the Senate from 2023. Days after the election, Alves even said that he would fight for the post of President of the House . Members of the PL say behind the scenes, however, that the former minister would have difficulty making her candidacy viable because she is very identified with Bolsonarism – by way of comparison, Pacheco has the sympathy of PT senators and center-right acronyms, such as União Brasil and MDB.
