Brazil closes Deaflympics with the highest number of medals in history

Brazil ended its participation in the Summer Deaflympics, last Sunday (05/15), in Caxias do Sul, the Rio Grande do Sul, with six bronze medals, the best result in the country in the competition.
The women's handball and soccer teams won the bronze medal on the last day of the disputes. It was the first Brazilian handball medal in history and the second consecutive one for girls on the pitch. The other bronze medals were two in judo (Rômulo Crispim and Alexandre Fernandes) and two in swimming (both with Guilherme Maia).
With this result, Brazil finished the competition in 44th place in the overall medal table and obtained the best quantitative mark of podiums in its history.
"It is a reason for intense joy to see this achievement of national parasports, which is competitive and with expressive results. Congratulations to the athletes, coaches, family members, and leaders responsible for this achievement", congratulated Ronaldo Bento, Minister of Citizenship.
And this result has the participation of public investments. In December 2021, the Federal Government invested R$ 800 thousand in holding the National Deaf Olympiad in São José dos Campos, in the interior of São Paulo. Another R$ 400 thousand were allocated through parliamentary amendments. The competition served as a selection to assemble the delegation that participated in the Deaflympic Games in Caxias do Sul.
The Federal Government was also a partner in the event. The Brazilian Doping Control Authority (ABCD) has appointed doping control officers trained to work on the sporting mega-event. In addition, it provided 250 kits for anti-doping tests and provided supplies for carrying out sample collections.
Greater delegation
The 24th edition of the Summer Deaflympics, held from May 1st to 15th, had the largest Brazilian delegation in history, with 237 members, 199 athletes (110 men and 89 women), and representation in 17 male and 14 female modalities.
Among athletes, managers, and technical committees, the mega event brought together more than five thousand people, representing 77 countries in the dispute of 20 modalities for men and 18 for women. It was the first time that a Latin American country hosted the event.
The overall title went to Ukraine, with 61 gold, 38 silver, and 38 bronze medals, out of a total of 137. Second place went to the United States, which totaled 54 podiums (19 gold, 11 silver, and 24 bronze). . In third was Iran, with 14 golds, 12 silvers, and 14 bronzes, out of a total of 40.
This was Brazil's seventh participation in the tournament, which began in 1924 in Paris, France. With the result of this edition, the country has won 16 medals in history, with one gold, one silver, and 14 bronzes.
